about

Since 2004 Sâadane Afif has been asking writers and artists to write lyrics inspired by his artworks. This simple experiment rapidly turned into something with a greater importance. The texts not only questioned the notion of interpretation and commentary on a piece of art; they also became a fundamental material of Afif's artistic practice. After repeating this gesture over one hundred times, it became obvious that the texts should be embodied. Sâadane Afif thus directed public performances to give the texts life through a singing or talking voice.

In 2009, Afif created a mock-up of a stage for a concert, which was in turn realized at the IAC Villeurbanne in 2013. Fabrics cut-outs from the curtains showing a stylized sunset grasped the attention of the artist, who used the material to produca anew work inspired by Rimbaud's poem "L'éternité". Combining these striated pieces of fabric with a printed transparency of the sea on Plexiglas, a new set of artworks came into being.
On the occasion of his exhibition "Quoi ? - L'éternité " at Atelier Hermès in Seoul in 2016, Sâadane Afif exhibited these works as well as a commissioned new set of lyrics.
In 2017, another stp of this project was exhibited for the group show "Posters" at FRAC Normandie Rouen. A bespoke poster announced the performance. Musician Nicolas Cueille, known as "Seal of Quality" was asked to mùake a selection of "L'éternité's" lyrics to put into music, which he then performed in aconcert on 22nd June 2017 in Rouen.
These songs are engraved on this record.
